PANIS: BLOOD AFFINITIES
Panis was one of France’s best two-year-olds in 2000, defeating the subsequent Gr.1 Hollywood Turf Cup ace Sligo Bay in the Gr.3 Prix de Condé, and trained on to take the following year’s Gr.3 Prix Messidor. A strongly-made half-brother to the eight-time Stakes scorer Political Whit, Panis is by Miswaki out of the Stakes-placed Political Parody and hails from the female line of the Champion Sprinter GODSWALK. The forty-three named foals in Panis’ first two crops feature the Gr.3 Prix de Cabourg victrix Out Of Time and have earned on average an exceptional 1.6 times the average earnings of their half-siblings by other sires.
Successful in the Gr.1 Prix de la Salamandre as a juvenile, Miswaki has sired thirty-four Graded/Group winners, ten of whom have triumphed at the highest level, while his sons Allied Forces, Black Tie Affair, Midyan, Raj Waki and Umatilla have each sired a Grade or Group 1 winner. Out Of Time is out of a daughter of Midyan and is thus inbred 2x3 to Miswaki. Of Miswaki’s standouts, the top sprinter Sir Shackleton is out of a granddaughter of TRUE COLORS and is thus inbred 3x4 to Miswaki’s grandam, the Matron Stakes victrix Rose Bower, while both the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye heroine Kistena and the leading Canadian filly Daylight Come are out of granddaughters of Rose Bower’s three parts-brother TARGOWICE. Rose Bower’s genetic full-brother GO MARCHING is the sire of BRINKMANSHIP and the damsire of SAYF EL ARAB and SECOND SET, while her close relatives Table Play and Carnival Princess are in turn the damsire of TURKOMAN and the dam of SALSE. Others from this prolific female line include HIGH BRITE, MANILA, SOUTHERN HALO, STARBOROUGH, STATELY DON and TOBOUGG. Miswaki’s damsire Buckpasser is a half-brother to the dam of POLISH NAVY.
Like the outstanding Barbaro, Dr Fong, Dubawi, Hollywood Wildcat, Intikhab, Johar and Observatory, Panis features a coupling of the Kentucky Oaks runner-up Gold Digger (the dam of Miswaki’s sire Mr Prospector) and her genetic three parts-sister, Roberto’s C.C.A. Oaks-winning dam Bramalea. Both are by Nashua, whose full-sister Stavroula is the dam of THE WONDER’s sire WITTGENSTEIN and the third dam of DISTINCTLY NORTH. Mr Prospector is closely related to the dam of MEADOWLAKE. Gold Digger is combined 3x3 with her three parts-sister Bold Sequence in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Cash Run, whose half-brother is the top sire FORESTRY.
Successful in the Gr.1 San Fernando Handicap, Panis’ damsire Doonesbury is by Matsadoon. A half-brother to the Prix du Jockey Club hero CARACOLERO and to the dam of SECRETO, Matsadoon is a grandson of Gay Hostess, who produced the fine duo CROWNED PRINCE and MAJESTIC PRINCE to Mr Prospector’s sire Raise A Native. Majestic Prince’s son COASTAL is a close genetic relative to Miswaki, while another son, MAJESTIC LIGHT sired Tobougg’s Prix de Diane-winning dam Lacovia and the Hollywood Derby ace Eternity Star from half-sisters to Miswaki. Majestic Prince’s full-sister Meadow Blue is the grandam of Miswaki’s standout ALLIED FORCES and REAL QUIET. Doonesbury’s dam is by Vaguely Noble, whose full-sister Vive La Reine is the dam of R. B. CHESNE and the grandam of GREAT COMMOTION and LEAD ON TIME.
